DEVONsphere Express' main purpose is to provide you with more data related to whatever you are currently working on, be it other documents, email messages, or web pages. Therefore it by default opens in See Also mode with live updates switched on.
In See Also mode DEVONsphere Express shows you other data related to: your current selection, files or text dragged into the input field or onto the closed menu extra icon, or data sent to it through its services.
Update See Also automatically is:
icon. icon (clicking switches live updates on).To drag files, email message from Apple Mail, or selected text to DEVONsphere Express' input field you need to make it stay open. Detach it from the menu bar or switch off automatic hiding with the 
switch in the top left corner of the menu. Alternatively use the services to send a selected file from the Finder or selected text from another Mac app to DEVONsphere Express or drag the item to DEVONsphere Express' closed icon in the menu bar.
If live updates are switched on DEVONsphere Express refocuses onto whatever you are working on as soon as you make another window active. To prevent this, temporarily pause live updates by clicking the spinning green radar icon in the input field. Live updates are automatically paused 
as soon as you make DEVONsphere Express' menu active.
In Search mode DEVONsphere Express behaves like Spotlight on steroids: type in a query and DEVONsphere Express finds all documents that match it. You switch to the Search mode using the magnifying glass 
button that pops out when you are pointing at the 
icon in the input field.
DEVONsphere Express uses advanced search operators, wildcards, and fuzzy search technology similar to DEVONthink and DEVONagent. You can find a complete list of operators in the appendix.
